Governance analyst Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah has raised concerns about petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. He warns that these actions could harm the independence of constitutional bodies.
In an interview with Citi FM, he noted that some members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are unhappy with the Chief Justice's actions during the election campaign. This dissatisfaction may lead people to view the petitions as politically motivated.
Professor Agyemang-Duah compared this situation to a past event involving former President Nana Akufo-Addo. He oversaw the removal of the then-Electoral Commission chairperson, which caused significant controversy.
He cautioned that if such removals become common, it sets a dangerous precedent. Every new government might feel compelled to replace key figures in constitutional bodies.
The professor emphasized that ongoing political interference would erode public trust. It could also create instability in governance. He warned that if each new government seeks to remove individuals from independent bodies, it will lead to mistrust and instability.
