Fuel Levy: No proper consultation took place – Collins Adomako slams govt

Collins Adomako-Mensah, the MP for Afigya Kwabre North, has criticized the government. He spoke about the controversial GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy. He claims it was passed without proper stakeholder consultation.

Adomako-Mensah appeared on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on June 7. He is also the Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee of Parliament. He noted that key stakeholders, like transport unions, were excluded from discussions.

He argued that the amendment to the levy was rushed through Parliament. There was no prior notice or engagement with stakeholders. He pointed out that the bill was not on the Order Paper when it was passed.

He condemned the government's parliamentary procedures as questionable. "There was no stakeholder engagement," he stated. As a member of Parliament and Deputy Ranking Member, he only saw the Memorandum during an emergency Finance Committee meeting.

He emphasized that GPRTU, which represents all drivers, was unaware of any changes. "What kind of engagement are you talking about?" he asked. On the day of passing, there was no mention of this item in the initial order paper.

An addendum with this item was later introduced in Parliament unexpectedly.
