Fuel levy: New taxes not needed to reset Ghana – MFWA tells Mahama

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has spoken out. He urged the Mahama administration to tackle waste and corruption in the energy sector. He believes this should take priority over imposing new taxes on Ghanaians.

His comments follow the passing of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This bill introduces a GHS1 levy on fuel. The government claims this tax is needed to clear debts in the power sector and stabilize electricity supply.

In a post on X, Braimah criticized the new tax. He argued that increased taxation benefits only a corrupt elite, harming ordinary citizens. “Resetting Ghana shouldn’t mean new taxes for elite looters,” he stated.

Braimah emphasized that efforts should focus on reducing waste and corruption across all sectors. He pointed out issues at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). “The scandal at NPA is far bigger than the National Service Scandal,” he added.

His views reflect wider public criticism from various groups. This includes opposition from the Minority in Parliament and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 presidential candidate. Both have condemned the new fuel levy as well.
