Fulfil galamsey ban promise – Archbishop Bonaventure tells Mahama

The Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his promise. He called for action against illegal mining, known as galamsey, within the first 120 days of the President's term.

During his Easter Sunday homily on April 21 at Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra, Archbishop Kwofie reminded the President of this commitment. He noted that over 100 days have passed since the inauguration. This leaves less than 20 days to meet the promise.

“The Catholic Church is concerned about galamsey activities,” he said. “They are ‘killing’ the public.” He emphasized that Ghanaians placed great trust in the President. This trust can easily fade away.

“Mr. President, know this: eyes are watching you,” he added. The Archbishop stressed that they take this promise seriously because galamsey is harming people and communities.

He highlighted that illegal mining damages the environment and urged decisive action to protect natural resources. He mentioned illegal miners from several West African countries operating in areas like Abrewa Nne Nkran.

“Let’s have men like Nana Bosompem,” he suggested. These are men with integrity who will restore normalcy to forestry practices.

Archbishop Kwofie also spoke about Jesus Christ's resurrection and its significance. “Never before has someone reported news such as this,” he stated.

He explained that it symbolizes dying to injustice and rising to justice and respect for one another in all actions.
