Full list of African countries slapped with heavy import taxes between 10% and 50% by Trump

On Wednesday, April 3, 2025, Africans learned about new US import taxes. These taxes are part of a policy from President Donald J. Trump.

Lesotho faces the highest tax at 50%. Madagascar follows with 47%. Mauritius has a 40% tax, while Botswana has 37%. Algeria is taxed at 30%, Tunisia at 28%, and Cote D’ivoire and Namibia at 21%. Nigeria's tax is set at 14%. Other African countries will face a 10% import tax.

President Trump called this day "one of the most important" in American history. He referred to it as a “Declaration of Economic Independence.”

He stated that factories would return to the US. He believes this change is already happening. The president aims to boost the domestic industrial base and open foreign markets.

New reciprocal duties will start after midnight on April 9. This includes a 20% tariff on the European Union and a 24% levy on Japan. Israel will face a 17% tariff. These rates are about half of what other countries charge for US goods.

Trump explained that they would charge these countries roughly half of their current rates.
