The Chief of Ashaiman, Nii Annan Adjor, has issued a warning to farmers. He is concerned about those renting land in the Ashaiman Lebanon Irrigation Scheme. Farmers must stop this practice immediately or face serious consequences.
Nii Annan Adjor noted that it is troubling to see farmers making agreements with unauthorized occupants. This behavior is leading to farmland loss and threatening food security in the area.
The Ashaiman Irrigation Scheme was established over 50 years ago by GIDA. It originally covered 400 hectares but now nearly half has been encroached upon. Farmlands are being converted into residential areas.
In an interview with Accra FM's Rebecca Lartey, Nii Annan Adjor shared plans to evict squatters. The traditional authority is working with GIDA’s new management on strategies for reclaiming agricultural land. Protecting remaining farmlands is vital for sustaining agriculture in the region.
Meanwhile, Mr. Eric Samuel Adu Dankwa, Acting CEO of GIDA, announced plans for legal action. He intends to seek a court injunction against unauthorized developments on the land. GIDA will work to remove all squatters and restore the area for agriculture.
The Chief’s warning and GIDA’s legal measures highlight the urgency of protecting farmland. This effort aims to ensure food production remains viable in Ashaiman.
