GA/R: Darkuman residents accuse police of collaborating with vigilante gang in violent swoop

Residents of Darkuman, a suburb in Accra, are upset. They accuse officers from the Darkuman Police Station of supporting a vigilante group. This group allegedly brutalized and robbed community members during a police operation over the weekend.

Eyewitnesses report that a police swoop on Saturday aimed to target drug dealers. However, it turned chaotic. Residents claim armed vigilantes accompanied the police and attacked civilians violently.

Victims say these vigilantes used knives, shovels, and other weapons. They assaulted people in front of armed police officers. Some residents accuse Chief Quansah, a senior officer, of participating in the attacks.

The operation destroyed several wooden structures and makeshift shops. Many residents suffered injuries, and valuables like mobile phones were stolen during the raid.

In interviews with Accra 100.5 FM's Samuel Addo, residents expressed shock. They described the incident as a “lawless and brutal attack” by those meant to protect them. One resident said they respect police authority but called the actions criminal.

Residents noted this is the fourth similar incident they have experienced. This has raised suspicions that police knowingly work with the vigilante group under false pretenses.

They are now urging the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate urgently. They want all responsible officers held accountable for their actions.

The Darkuman Police Commander confirmed that officers were deployed for the operation. However, he denied any knowledge of a vigilante group being involved or any misconduct occurring.

Despite this denial, residents insist they will not stay silent. They are ready to take further action if authorities do not intervene soon.
