President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the demolition of buildings on waterways at Mallam Junction. This decision aims to reduce flooding in the Weija Gbawe Municipality. Flooding has caused significant loss of life and property damage over the years.
The directive follows Mahama's recent inspection of flood-prone areas in Accra. He met with city engineers, municipal officials, and residents to discuss flooding issues. During his visit, he expressed concern about unauthorized structures on waterways.
Mahama highlighted that these constructions contribute to frequent flooding in the region. He questioned local authorities about how such developments were allowed. The President emphasized that Mallam Junction is crucial for managing stormwater.
He pointed out that blocking natural waterways decreases their ability to handle rainwater. This leads to severe flooding during heavy rains. "How did the Assembly allow this to happen?" he asked.
Mahama stressed that filling up waterways with buildings is problematic. He noted that drains cannot handle large volumes of water during storms. "Let’s do what we have to do," he urged, calling for immediate removal of these structures.
Flooding remains a major challenge in Accra, especially at Mallam Junction and other areas like Weija and Kaneshie. Contributing factors include poor drainage systems and illegal construction on floodplains. Residents and experts have long demanded action on this issue.
Despite previous demolitions and warnings, encroachment continues to worsen the problem. Mahama's directive represents a renewed effort to address flooding causes and protect vulnerable communities from disaster.
