GA/R: Tema Chief Fisherman decries political interference in premix fuel distribution

The Chief Fisherman of the Tema Fishing Harbour, Nii Odametey II, is worried. He sees increasing political interference in premix fuel distribution. This situation is harming the local fishing industry.

In an interview with journalist Rebecca Lartey from Accra 100.5 FM, he shared his concerns. Some political party loyalists are diverting subsidized fuel to non-fishermen. This creates an artificial shortage of fuel for actual fishermen.

As a result, many canoe owners must buy more expensive vehicular fuel. They are forced to get it from regular fuel stations. This significantly raises their operational costs.

Nii Odametey II noted that rising fuel prices have serious consequences. Many fisherfolk can no longer afford to operate their canoes and are abandoning them. He has urged the sector minister to take urgent action on this issue.

Fish traders who rely on the fishing industry are also frustrated. They say the fuel shortage is hurting their businesses as well.
