GA/R: Tema railway workers decry harsh conditions amid ongoing nationwide strike

The nationwide strike by Ghana Railway Company Limited workers continues. Staff at the Tema Railway Station are increasingly frustrated. They face worsening working conditions and lack basic resources.

Workers report no electricity and limited access to water. There is also a shortage of padlocks for securing facilities after hours.

Mr. Kwasi Antwi, a security officer, spoke to reporter Rebecca Lartey about their dire situation. He noted that workers have not received salaries for over seven months. These challenges hinder their ability to work and affect their families' well-being.

“Our working environment is unbearable,” Mr. Antwi said. “We don’t even have light or water.” He added that they cannot lock the station properly at night due to the lack of padlocks. “We’re just managing to hold on,” he lamented.

Mr. Antwi emphasized that staff want to return to work. However, they demand firm commitments from the government to resolve their issues.

The strike began over salary arrears and poor working conditions. It has stalled operations across the country’s rail network. There are increasing calls for government action to prevent a total collapse of the railway sector.
