GA/R: Tetegu footbridge abandoned as pedestrians risk their lives crossing busy Accra-Kasoa highway

A new overhead footbridge has been completed at Tetegu. It is located in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region. Despite this, many pedestrians still cross the busy Accra-Kasoa highway dangerously. They ignore the designated safe crossing point.

The Accra-Kasoa highway is part of the ECOWAS Expressway network. It is one of the busiest roads in Accra, with vehicles often speeding. Authorities built the footbridge after removing a traffic light to improve pedestrian safety.

However, Class Media correspondent Samuel Addo observed that few people use it. Out of every 100 pedestrians, only about 15 use the footbridge. The rest choose to cross directly, putting themselves at risk.

When asked why they avoid the footbridge, many cited time and convenience. Some said it was too far from their preferred crossing points. Others simply preferred a quicker but riskier option.

Before the bridge was built, crossing was very difficult due to fast traffic. The hope was that the footbridge would solve this problem. Those who do use it praise its importance and encourage others to follow suit.

A trader along the highway expressed concern over this disregard for safety. She recalled a tragic incident where a pedestrian was hit by a speeding vehicle last week. “I've seen too many lives lost here,” she said passionately. “The footbridge is there for a reason.” She urged all road users to prioritize their safety.
