Tension is rising in Tema after a protest by traditional priestesses. The priestesses, known as Wulomoi, are from Tema Newtown. They oppose the rumored nomination of Madam Ebi Bright as the new Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).
The protest took place at the TMA forecourt. It featured traditional rites and rituals. The priestesses wore red cloths and chanted war songs. They slaughtered a sheep, poured libations with schnapps, and invoked spiritual incantations. These rituals aimed to reject what they called an "imposition" of a non-indigene on Tema.
This demonstration follows speculation about President John Dramani Mahama's potential appointment of Madam Ebi Bright. She was a former Parliamentary Candidate for Tema Central in the 2024 elections. The priestesses believe that only a native of Tema should hold the MCE position.
They argue that this person must understand Tema’s traditions and governance needs. A spokesperson for the group spoke to journalists about their concerns. She noted that residents have been patient in allowing MCE appointments in Ashaiman without protest.
However, she warned that this tolerance will not apply to Tema itself. “Ashaiman is under Tema,” she stated, “and we have allowed the government to choose their own without protest.” She emphasized that they will resist any non-indigene appointment until their demands are met.
