The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) will conduct a tree management exercise. This will happen on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. The operation is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
GAEC's official statement confirms the exercise has approval from the Executive Director of the Forest Services Division. It will involve cutting down eight mahogany trees and six Leucaena trees. Additionally, they will prune 43 mahogany trees along both sides of the highway.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other stakeholders will support this operation. The Ghana Police Service will assist with traffic control during the exercise.
GAEC describes this effort as part of managing roadside vegetation for safety. However, there is growing public concern about recent tree felling in Accra. Environmentalists view areas like the Atomic-Kwabenya stretch as vital for urban forest cover.
Some activists criticize what they see as indiscriminate tree removal without proper safeguards. Despite these concerns, GAEC remains committed to responsible execution of the exercise.
Residents and motorists using the highway should plan ahead. They are encouraged to cooperate with traffic personnel during this time.
