GAF embark on ‘surgical’ anti-galamsey operations across all 3 commands

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have started anti-galamsey operations. These operations target illegal mining in protected areas.

The goal is to minimize collateral damage while addressing this issue. This effort is part of a national strategy to protect the environment and water bodies.

The operations are coordinated across the Northern, Central, and Southern Commands.

In the Northern Command, troops focused on Bole and the Black Volta Basin. These areas have seen increased illegal mining recently.

Soldiers dismantled mining camps and seized equipment used by illegal operators. This action aims to reduce pollution in vital water bodies and protect affected farmlands.

In the Central Command, operations targeted Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves. Troops quickly destroyed makeshift shelters used by miners.

They also seized excavators and other mining machinery found there. These forest reserves are ecologically important and face threats from illegal mining.

Local authorities and environmental groups welcomed GAF's actions in these areas.

Meanwhile, the Southern Command conducted similar operations in Jerusalem enclave and Subri Forest Reserve. They seized multiple excavators and demolished illegal structures built by miners.

The GAF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies. They urged the public to support efforts against illegal mining.
