GAF launches anti-galamsey operations across three commands

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are stepping up their fight against illegal mining. This activity is locally known as galamsey. They have conducted coordinated operations across the Northern, Central, and Southern Commands.

The GAF focused on major illegal mining hubs. Their operations targeted forest reserves and river basins with severe environmental damage.

Operation Breakdown:

Northern Command: Troops were sent to the Bole area and Black Volta Basin. Illegal mining there has polluted water bodies and harmed farmlands.

Central Command: The military focused on Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves. Extensive illegal mining in these areas threatens biodiversity and conservation efforts.

Southern Command: Operations concentrated on the Jerusalem area and Subri Forest Reserve. Both locations have seen a rise in illegal mining encampments recently.

During these operations, troops seized excavators, water pumps, and other mining equipment. They also dismantled makeshift shelters used by illegal miners in the forest reserves.

These actions are part of the government's renewed campaign. The goal is to restore Ghana’s forest reserves and protect vital water bodies from pollution, deforestation, and ecological damage.
