Political risk analyst Dr. Theo Acheampong has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). He questioned their recent stance on the Chief Justice's suspension. He found their arguments legally weak and inconsistent.
Dr. Acheampong spoke on JoyNews' Newsfile. He noted that the GBA's position seems politically motivated. This is especially true when compared to their earlier, more measured press release from a week ago.
The GBA recently called for President Mahama to revoke the Chief Justice's suspension. Dr. Acheampong challenged the legal basis of the GBA’s claims. He pointed out that many respected legal minds within the association disagree with them.
He asked, “Where have they been all this while?” He highlighted serious governance issues over the past eight years. Despite these issues, he said, the GBA has largely remained silent until now.
Dr. Acheampong stated that their current position does not hold up under scrutiny. He disagreed with their call for revocation of the Chief Justice’s suspension.
He expressed confusion over the GBA's sudden shift in tone. Just days ago, they issued a balanced statement. Now, they seem to represent only 47 out of over 5,000 members.
He emphasized that nothing about the President’s actions appears unconstitutional. The President is following due process in this matter.
“If the GBA believes what he is doing is unconstitutional, they should go to court,” he suggested. “Let the judiciary settle it.” However, he doubts they would make a convincing case.
