GBA’s position on CJ Torkornoo’s suspension disappointing, appalling – Prof Khalid

Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Prof. Sharif Khalid Mahmud, has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). He called their position on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension "disappointing and appalling."

The GBA has demanded the immediate revocation of the Chief Justice's suspension. They describe this action as unconstitutional and lacking legal basis under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

On Channel One TV's The Big Issue, Prof. Khalid expressed his dismay. He believes the GBA is losing its influence in upholding democracy and legal integrity.

He reflected on the GBA’s historical significance during Ghana’s independence struggles. He noted that it was once seen as a critical institution alongside UTAG and NUGS.

Prof. Khalid remarked that many viewed the GBA as a constitutional arm of government. He emphasized how powerful and critical their voice was in Ghanaian society.

However, he lamented that their current stance lacks assertiveness and integrity. He described the GBA’s response as "vanilla of hot air." This raises questions about their consistency in addressing legal matters.

Prof. Khalid compared this situation to past controversies, particularly regarding Charlotte Osei. He suggested that the GBA showed bias by remaining silent on her case while being vocal now.

"When Charlotte Osei's issue arose, did we hear a cough from the biased GBA?" he questioned, highlighting discrepancies in their actions.
