GBA calls for adherence to Rule of Law in Chief Justice removal process

Ghana Bar Association Statement

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has issued a statement. They urge all parties involved in the Chief Justice's removal to respect the rule of law. They also emphasize the importance of judicial independence.

This statement is signed by National President Mrs. Efua Ghartey and National Secretary Mr. Kwaku Gyau Baffour. It comes after President John Dramani Mahama suspended the Chief Justice. This suspension has sparked controversy regarding her removal.

The GBA's General Council has been closely monitoring developments for two months. As of March 27, 2025, three petitions have been filed for her removal. Additionally, two legal challenges are at the Supreme Court questioning this process.

There have also been applications for injunctions against these proceedings. The GBA cites Articles 146(6) to (10) of the 1992 Constitution. They stress that any removal must follow the constitutional process outlined in these articles.
