Private legal practitioner Abraham Amaliba is disappointed with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). He believes the GBA has returned to political bias. This follows a brief period of neutrality.
Mr. Amaliba spoke on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey. He reacted to the GBA’s recent statement about Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo's suspension.
He noted that the GBA had shown maturity and impartiality before. Now, he feels it favors the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He described the earlier statement as one of the best in 20 years. It showed a bar that was not taking sides and following rules. It also restrained lawyers from making distracting comments.
However, Mr. Amaliba said this optimism has ended abruptly. He stated, “Habits once cultivated are difficult to discard.”
He added that the bar is usually critical when the NDC is in power. He thought their earlier statement indicated a change, but now he sees they have reverted to old ways.
