GBA under pressure to please NPP – Amaliba alleges bias over CJ suspension

Private lawyer Abraham Amaliba has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). He claims the GBA shows political bias toward the New Patriotic Party (NPP). This follows their recent comments on Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo's suspension.

Amaliba spoke on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey. He expressed disappointment in the GBA's lack of neutrality in national issues.

He said, “This is a bar that wants to continue its habits.” Amaliba expected better behavior from the GBA regarding the Chief Justice’s suspension.

He questioned the legal basis of the GBA’s position. “Their resolution does not discuss law,” he noted. He added that they did not cite any constitutional violations by the president.

Amaliba pointed out that historically, the GBA criticizes governments only when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power. He believed this trend was returning but felt little concern about it now. “I’m happy the bar is becoming a more bonded association,” he said.

Deputy Education Minister Clement Apaak echoed similar views. He accused the GBA of being politically selective in a Facebook post.

Dr. Apaak criticized them for only speaking out when the NDC governs. “President John Dramani Mahama will not be distracted by a Seasonal Association,” he wrote.

He responded to the GBA’s call for President Mahama to reinstate the suspended Chief Justice. Dr. Apaak emphasized that Mahama remains focused on his duties and urged legal action if laws were broken.
