Professor Amin Alhassan is the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). He stated that the GBC Board is legitimate, despite rumors.
He explained that the National Media Commission (NMC) constituted the Board. The Executive did not create it, and its mandate remains valid. The NMC has not revoked this mandate.
At a staff durbar at GBC headquarters, he referenced Article 167(c) of the 1992 Constitution. This article protects state-owned media from executive control. He criticized claims to the contrary as coming from those “refusing to learn.”
The durbar included board members, management, and staff. It aimed to address recent events affecting GBC’s image and business outlook.
Unionized staff had previously called for Prof. Alhassan’s resignation. They argued his leadership did not align with GBC’s goals.
On March 20, 2025, Sam Nat Kevor spoke at a press conference. He is the Chairman of the GBC Local Union. He declared Prof. Alhassan “unwelcome” but assured workers would protect GBC's role in national security without disrupting operations.
In another development, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department suspended Prof. Alhassan’s salary starting March 2025. They cited financial clearance requirements for his position.
A letter from Mr. Kwasi Agyei explained this decision further. Section 25(5) of the Public Financial Management Act requires clearance for appointments and renewals. This includes retrospective approval for Prof. Alhassan’s contract from October 2, 2023, to September 2027.
Prof. Alhassan expressed concern about misinformation affecting GBC's reputation. He noted that a diplomatic mission withdrew from a partnership due to public noise and instability at GBC.
He warned that negative publicity could harm operations at GBC. He said bad press would lead to suffering for the Corporation.
“The figures I have seen for January to March don’t look good,” he added. “We should prepare ourselves for a bad year.”
He urged staff to resolve issues internally and emphasized unity and productivity.
Mr. Samuel Kojo Intsiaba is the Chairman of the GBC Board. He called for industrial harmony between management and staff in a competitive media landscape.
He acknowledged that internal tensions are natural but must be managed constructively.
During the durbar, he read a letter from NMC dated March 25, 2025. This letter confirmed Prof. Alhassan’s tenure renewal on February 26, 2024.
The renewal was publicly announced during GBC's new Board introduction on August 13, 2024.
The NMC urged communication of this renewal to staff and offered clarifications.
Staff raised concerns about logistics, equipment, and compensation during the durbar meeting.
They commended Prof. Alhassan for his leadership and rebranding efforts at GBC.
They also requested absorption of National Service personnel in social media roles to maintain digital engagement.
