GES boss commissions smart classroom block at Opoku Ware SHS

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has opened a new classroom block at Opoku Ware Senior High School. This is part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project. The new building has 12 classrooms and replaces an old 2-classroom facility.

Each classroom features modern learning tools. They include interactive smart screens and tablets for every student. Reliable internet connectivity allows access to global knowledge. Solar-powered charging cabinets promote sustainable energy use. The furniture is ergonomic, ensuring comfort and focus.

Teachers will use the KATON360 Learning Management System for lessons. This platform supports interactive teaching and real-time assessments. It also offers digital resources and personalized learning journeys.

At the ceremony, Prof. Davis emphasized that today's classrooms are dynamic spaces. He stated that technology enhances curiosity, collaboration, and comprehension. He assured that the government will continue implementing effective educational policies.

Prof. Davis highlighted the importance of robust internet infrastructure for smart schools. He mentioned potential measures to address security and privacy concerns in digital education.

Rev. Father Stephen Owusu Sekyere, President of CHASS, praised the initiative as bold. However, he urged that all schools should benefit from this project equally. He stressed that students in remote areas must also have access to smart classrooms.

The Ghana Smart Schools Project aims to upgrade existing public senior high school facilities into smart environments for digital learning. New structures will be built in some areas as well.

Under this project, students will receive free computer tablets for learning purposes. Teachers will also get laptops to aid their research and teaching efforts.

Both devices will come preloaded with learning materials like textbooks. This initiative aims to improve educational quality in beneficiary schools.

The event was attended by students and heads of senior high schools in the region. It was themed “Smart Schools: The Future of Digital Education.”
