The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, announced a fine of GH₵2,000. This fine targets traders operating on pavements and unauthorized spaces in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 20. It occurred during a decongestion exercise led by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly. The goal is to clear street vendors from pedestrian walkways and reduce congestion.
Minister Ocloo toured the area with enforcement teams. She warned traders against obstructing the clean-up exercise. “We will activate our task force to work 24 hours,” she stated. They will mark a red line on the road. Crossing that line will incur a fee of GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,000.
She also mentioned that market leaders will monitor compliance. Their role is to ensure trading stays within permitted zones. “This is about maintaining discipline in the city,” she said. She emphasized that pavements are for pedestrians, not for trading.
The Minister noted this effort is part of a larger initiative. The aim is to make the capital cleaner and more orderly. She urged all traders to cooperate and move to designated market spaces.
The announcement has received mixed reactions from residents. Some support better city management while others worry about limited space in existing markets for relocated traders.
