A new dialysis centre has opened at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital (TQMH) in Mampong-Akuapem. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S. K. Bagbin, inaugurated the GH¢ 5.8 million facility on Friday.
The centre aims to improve healthcare access and reduce mortality rates. It features four advanced dialysis units with essential treatment equipment. This includes tubing, blood pumps, dialysate pumps, and a water purification system.
Additionally, there is a new outhouse and waiting area sponsored by Enterprise Group PLC. The inauguration also marked the launch of the TQMH Dialysis Fund. This fund will help vulnerable patients who cannot afford dialysis services.
During the event, Mr. Bagbin emphasized that health is a fundamental right. He noted this right is protected by Ghana's 1992 Constitution. He called for more healthcare facilities in rural areas, stating, “We have more work to do.” Currently, only one in ten patients can access life-saving dialysis due to costs and distance.
Mr. Bagbin pledged ongoing support for TQMH and urged the government to prioritize healthcare. He stressed the importance of people-centered care over curative approaches.
The Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, sent a goodwill message before the event. He highlighted the urgent need for sustainable financing to address chronic kidney disease challenges.
