GH₵50m bail deliberately set to block Wontumi’s release – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made serious accusations against the government. He claims they set an impossible bail condition of GH₵50 million. This, he says, is to prevent the timely release of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Bawumia spoke to journalists after a tense meeting at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). Earlier, chaotic scenes had unfolded there. He expressed frustration over what he called a politically motivated obstruction of justice.

He stated that the high bail amount was intentionally imposed to keep Wontumi in custody indefinitely. "The bail conditions for Chairman Wontumi are very onerous," he said. He questioned how many people in Ghana could have property worth GH₵50 million.

"I believe this was just set to prevent his timely release," he added.

Dr. Bawumia also mentioned that he could not visit Wontumi at NIB headquarters due to security concerns from an agitated crowd outside. While condemning the bail conditions, he urged NPP supporters to remain calm.

He assured them that the NPP would pursue all legal avenues regarding Wontumi’s detention and the bail terms. "We will follow due process to ensure his release as soon as possible," he promised.
