GHC 1 fuel levy sparks backlash as MFWA boss calls out waste in energy sector

Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), criticized the Mahama administration. He opposed the introduction of a GHC 1 fuel levy. Braimah urged the government to address corruption and mismanagement instead of imposing new taxes.

The levy is part of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025. It adds a charge on every litre of fuel purchased. Government officials argue that this tax will help clear legacy debts in the energy sector. They also claim it will support consistent electricity supply across Ghana.

Braimah condemned this move on social media, calling it misguided and unfair. He stated, “Resetting Ghana shouldn’t be about new taxes to enrich elite looters.” He emphasized that efforts should focus on reducing waste and corruption in all sectors.

He questioned why a new levy was necessary when financial irregularities exist at key institutions like the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). Braimah remarked, “The scandal at NPA is far bigger than the National Service Scandal.”

His criticism reflects growing public frustration over rising living costs. Many people feel there is a lack of accountability in managing public resources. While the government insists that the GHC 1 levy is essential for rescuing the power sector, critics like Braimah believe reforms should focus on cutting waste first.
