“GHS 300m can build a pad factory” – MP criticizes gov't’s sanitary pad procurement plan

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the MP for Akim Swedru, is disappointed. He criticized the government's decision to spend GHC300 million on sanitary pads for female students.

In a social media statement, he questioned this short-term spending. He suggested that the money could be better used to build a local factory. This factory would manufacture sanitary pads and provide lasting benefits.

Osei Nyarko asked, “If the Government has 300 million Ghana Cedis for sanitary pads, why not use it to set up a factory?” He believes this would cost less than the allocated amount for 2025.

His comments come during a national discussion on menstrual hygiene. Many are concerned about accessibility for girls in underserved communities.

Government officials defend the allocation as a way to improve menstrual health and support girl-child education. However, critics like Osei Nyarko argue that this approach lacks long-term vision.

He stated, “This country cannot rely on imported solutions when we can manufacture them here.” His remarks resonate with development economists and advocates of local manufacturing.

They believe a sanitary pad factory could lower production costs and create jobs. It would also ensure a steady supply chain for schools and health institutions across the country.
