Catherine Adu-Asare, a Nutritionist with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has urged Ghanaians to adopt healthier eating habits to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Speaking at a Meatless Monday seminar in Accra, she highlighted that NCDs are a significant cause of death worldwide, particularly in developing countries.
Risk factors include poor diet, alcohol, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles, although some factors like age and family history are unavoidable.
Adu-Asare encouraged the public to eat more plant-based foods, healthy fats, and lean proteins while reducing sodium and added sugars.
Elizabeth Esi Denyoh, Chairperson of the International Diabetes Federation Africa Region, also stressed the importance of regular check-ups for early detection of health issues.
The seminar promoted healthier eating choices and the Meatless Monday initiative.
