Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG) Supports New Energy Levy
The Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG) supports the Government of Ghana's new GHS1 Energy Sector Levy. This levy aims to address the growing debt in the electricity sector.
On June 5, 2025, IPGG CEO Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor issued a statement. He praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for its responsible approach.
The statement emphasized that this policy is necessary and urgent. The current debt situation is serious and avoidable. Mismanagement of previous funds has led to distress in the sector.
This distress affects power producers, fuel suppliers, and system reliability. Funds meant for settling debts were not used properly. As a result, the entire power delivery system is under strain.
Independent Power Generators cannot recover costs or maintain assets. They also struggle to secure timely fuel supplies. This situation threatens grid stability and investor confidence.
IPGG commends the government for taking decisive action with this levy. If managed well, it can restore liquidity and credibility in the power sector.
While acknowledging the burden on consumers, IPGG stresses that inaction leads to severe consequences. Blackouts, plant shutdowns, job losses, and reduced productivity are immediate risks.
A stable electricity supply requires collective effort and accountability from all stakeholders. IPGG urges all Ghanaians to support this measure in good faith.
They are ready to work with the government to ensure effective use of levy proceeds. The goal is financial sustainability and operational efficiency for the sector.
Signed,
Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor
