GIMPA SRC elections suspended following injunction by disqualified candidate

The Student Representative Council (SRC) elections at GIMPA are suspended. This follows an injunction filed by presidential hopeful Bismark Abusa. The injunction was served on the GIMPA SRC and the Electoral Commission. It comes after the disqualification of Abusa’s running mate, Sergio Thompson.

Two out of three presidential candidates were disqualified by the Commission. They cited alleged violations of the SRC Constitution. The elections were originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 24.

Shiraz Ibn Ziyaad is a spokesperson for Bismark Abusa. He spoke to Citi News on April 24. He accused the Electoral Commission of acting unlawfully.

Ziyaad stated that the legal action aims to pause the electoral process. This will happen until the matter is fully resolved in court. He explained that his client’s running mate was disqualified for not resigning from an executive position before the election.

Ziyaad believes that "executive position" needs interpretation by the Judicial Council. He noted that with elections scheduled, there isn’t enough time for proper determination.

Their injunction application seeks to maintain the status quo and stay proceedings. Ziyaad warned that proceeding with elections could lead to complications without a court decision.

GIMPA management has assured students they will address these developments soon.
