The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has repatriated 925 undocumented migrants. This followed a recent operation in Accra. Most of the migrants were engaged in street begging. They were arrested during a major swoop on May 16, 2025. The repatriation process began the next day, May 17.
On May 19, GIS confirmed the numbers. They reported that 819 Nigeriens and 106 Nigerians have been returned home. “Repatriation started on Saturday morning,” the statement said. “As of now, 925 persons have been successfully repatriated.” The GIS is working to remove the remaining undocumented migrants.
Currently, there are 2,241 persons held at designated Holding Centres. The breakdown of nationalities is as follows:
- Nigerien: 2,073
- Nigerian: 138
- Burkinabe: 28
- Guinean: 1
- Malian: 1
The GIS stated that all immigrants underwent profiling and security screening. This was done according to Standard Operating Procedures. Immigrants were also separated by gender and age for safety reasons.
GIS assured that meals and other needs are provided for those in detention. A clinic is available to offer medical services when necessary.
