Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary under President Nana Akufo-Addo, has made an appeal. He urges foreign nationals to enter Ghana legally. He noted that while Ghana is welcoming, illegal migration creates serious challenges for security.
His comments came after the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) conducted a round-up. This operation led to the arrest of over 2,200 undocumented foreign beggars in Accra. A total of 2,241 beggars were apprehended, including 384 adult males and 525 adult females. The arrests also included 577 male children and 755 female children across eleven busy areas in Accra.
Adjei spoke on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 19. He supported the government's efforts to enforce immigration laws. However, he warned that problems could continue without proper border regulation and monitoring.
He stated that repeated arrests would eventually send a message to migrants. "No one is saying Nigerians or any other nationals cannot come to Ghana," he said. "But please, come legally so you can enjoy our hospitality."
Mr. Adjei acknowledged that illegal immigration cannot be completely stopped. Yet, consistent enforcement can act as a deterrent over time. He expressed concern about undocumented migrants re-entering the country due to weaknesses in border management.
"You can’t cure every single illegal migrant; that’s not realistic," he explained. "But with repeated action, over time, the impact will be felt." He concluded by saying, "Ghana loves you. But come the right way."
