GIS bares teeth at foreigners begging for alms at Obossey-Okai

The Ghana Immigration Service has launched an operation in Kaneshie and Abossey Okai. This effort aims to remove street children and their guardians. Many of these individuals are believed to be foreign nationals.

The operation began early on Friday, May 16. It is part of a national initiative to reduce streetism. The initiative also enforces immigration laws and promotes public safety.

Immigration officers used operational vehicles during the exercise. They moved through busy intersections and sidewalks. Officers engaged with individuals, mainly women and children, who were begging.

Authorities say the operation aims to identify undocumented migrants. It also seeks to reduce congestion in urban areas. Additionally, it addresses the exploitation of children in public spaces.

This action responds to growing public concern about street dwellers in Accra's commercial zones. It follows a warning from Dr. Ernestina Tetteh on May 8. She raised concerns about rising child trafficking in Ghana.

Dr. Tetteh highlighted the organized nature of this issue. She noted that children from neighboring countries are often involved.

The Immigration Service promises to work with relevant agencies on this matter. They aim for a humane yet firm approach while safeguarding vulnerable children's rights. Their goal is to restore order in urban areas.
