GIS detains 2,241 undocumented migrants in Accra; medical screening underway ahead of repatriation

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 2,241 foreign nationals. This operation targets undocumented migrants begging on the streets of Accra.

The operation started early on Friday, May 16. It aims to address the rising issue of street begging in the capital. The detainees include both adults and children.

Here’s a breakdown of those arrested:

- Adults: 909 (384 males, 525 females)
- Children: 1,332 (577 males, 755 females)
- Total: 2,241 (961 males, 1,280 females)

The detainees are undergoing medical and security screenings at GIS National Headquarters in Accra. These screenings are necessary before their repatriation.

Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Mr. Amoako-Atta issued a statement about the operation. He assured the public that all detainees are treated professionally and with respect for their human rights.

“They are currently going through security and medical screening,” the statement said.

Key areas targeted during the operation include Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and Obetsebi Roundabout.

The GIS also plans to repatriate undocumented migrants. They aim to dismantle criminal networks that help these migrants stay in the city.

The Service reassured everyone that detainees will be handled professionally throughout this process. Their human rights will be fully respected at all times.
