Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, have intercepted an attempt to smuggle 25 bags of cocoa beans into Togo through an unapproved route.
The operation, carried out late Sunday night, April 7, followed a tip-off that led the OIC and his Operations Commander to swiftly mobilize eight personnel to lay an ambush in the Kauk border community.
Two unlicensed vehicle operators transporting the cocoa have been arrested and are currently in GIS custody.
The intercepted cocoa beans have also been secured and are expected to be handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for further action.
Authorities have commended the officers for their vigilance in curbing cross-border smuggling, which continues to threaten Ghana’s economy.
