The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) celebrated World Press Freedom Day on Friday night. They honored 24 individuals and institutions for their contributions to media freedom in Ghana.
The event took place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. It aimed to commemorate press freedom and address new challenges. This year’s theme was “Reporting in the Brave New World.” It focused on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism.
GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour opened the event. He acknowledged past mistakes, including delays in sending invitations. He thanked sponsors like KGL Group, SSNIT, NCA, and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for their support.
Among those honored was Mr. Alex Dade, Executive Chairman of KGL Group. He received praise for his strong support of the media. Former GJA President Ransford Tetteh and Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko were also recognized for their contributions.
Dwumfour emphasized that journalists stand on the shoulders of giants. These pioneers fought for press freedom during political and economic challenges.
The GJA announced plans to rename the Best Radio News Reporter award after Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby, known as “Tarzan.” This honors his role in establishing private radio with Radio Eye.
“We want to honor achievers while they are still alive,” Dwumfour said.
During the celebration, Dwumfour discussed AI's implications for journalism. He highlighted opportunities like improved data analysis and automated transcription. However, he warned about risks such as deepfakes and misinformation generated by AI.
“The AI revolution is a crucial conversation,” he stated. He cautioned that irresponsible use could harm media credibility.
Dwumfour reaffirmed GJA’s commitment to responsible journalism. “We will not tolerate attacks on press freedom or irresponsible practices,” he declared.
He reiterated efforts to support journalists through initiatives like the Journalists Support Fund. More media heroes will be honored at future World Press Freedom Day celebrations.
“It is our goal to make this a permanent feature,” he revealed.
Dwumfour called for a national effort to protect journalists and uphold press freedom. “Let us build a free, vibrant media landscape committed to public interest,” he urged.
