The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, condemned the assault on three journalists. The attack occurred in the Western Region by illegal small-scale miners, known as galamsey operators.
This incident took place on February 21, 2025, in the Breman-Adomanya forest. The journalists were reporting on environmental damage from illegal mining activities.
Mr. Dwumfour stated that the assailants caused severe physical harm and damaged equipment. He described the attack as “barbaric” and called for swift justice for the victims.
He expressed concern over the safety of journalists. Despite their important role against illegal mining, their welfare is often overlooked.
“It is unfortunate that our safety does not seem to be a priority,” he said. Mr. Dwumfour noted that while the government has interventions to curb illegal mining, media involvement is lacking.
He added that this exclusion leaves journalists vulnerable to risks. The GJA plans to engage with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources about these concerns.
Additionally, Mr. Dwumfour wants to consult with the Ghana Police Service. He aims to understand what measures are being taken for journalist safety in high-risk areas like galamsey sites.
