GJA demands immediate arrest of NPP Vice Chairman over threats to journalists

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has demanded the arrest of Alhaji Osman Masawudu. He is the Third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The GJA cites his threatening behavior toward journalists as dangerous.

This demand follows remarks made by Masawudu during an interview on Ash FM. He allegedly threatened physical assault against Media General journalists at NPP events. His comments have faced widespread condemnation from media stakeholders and press freedom advocates.

These threats come after a previous incident. Masawudu was seen on video pushing away a TV3 microphone during an NPP press briefing. Many viewed this action as unprofessional and hostile.

At a press conference in Accra, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour condemned Masawudu's actions. He called them reckless and a threat to human life and democracy. "We condemn them in no uncertain terms," he stated.

Dwumfour urged civil society, diplomats, and international bodies to support their call for an apology from Masawudu. He warned that if he does not retract his comments, they will hold him responsible for any attacks on TV3 reporters.

The GJA noted that Media General has reported the matter to the police. They urged law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively. "The police must not wait for the worst to happen," they said.

They called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to invite or arrest Masawudu immediately.
