GJA renews call for state of emergency in galamsey zones

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is calling for a state of emergency. This request targets areas with ongoing illegal mining activities.

The GJA noted that some progress has been made. Some perpetrators have been arrested, and some mining licenses revoked. However, they believe a state of emergency is necessary to protect forests and rivers.

At a press conference in Accra, GJA President Albert Dumfour spoke out. He urged the government to take stronger action against illegal mining. He suggested repealing the law that allows mining in forest reserves.

Dumfour also called for better protection for journalists. He wants the government to help them work freely in mining areas.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, made an announcement. He stated that Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2462 will be revoked when Parliament reconvenes.

On Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Gyamfi reiterated President Mahama's stance against galamsey. He explained that legal discussions are delaying the revocation of L.I 2462.

However, he assured that steps for its revocation are underway. Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine confirmed a bill is ready for Parliament's return from recess.
