Ghana Journalists Association Takes Action Against OSP
Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour is the President of the Ghana Journalists Association. He announced that lawyers will file court processes against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). This action aims to stop harassment of journalist Gordon Asare Bediako.
During a news conference in Accra, Mr. Dwumfour stated they would seek an injunction. This injunction would restrain the OSP from further harassment or interference with Asare-Bediako. He emphasized their commitment to upholding the rule of law and justice.
Mr. Dwumfour criticized the Special Prosecutor for deviating from his mandate. He urged that the Special Prosecutor should not become a "Special Persecutor."
On April 2, 2025, at 1 PM, Mr. Asare-Bediako received a call from an OSP officer. The officer was at Wontumi Radio and Movement TV, wanting to speak with him. Mr. Asare-Bediako went to the OSP premises around 2 PM voluntarily.
He believed they would have an informal conversation about previous statements he made on Movement TV. About two weeks earlier, he discussed how the OSP requested a private jet from the government for operations.
The Special Prosecutor accused him of implying corruption against the OSP, which he denied. His refusal to disclose his source was seen as non-cooperation in investigations. Consequently, he was officially arrested and informed of his rights.
Mr. Asare-Bediako was released on a GHC5 million bail bond with two sureties. Since then, he has been reporting regularly to the OSP.
