GMet warns of more rains and flash floods as rainy season peaks

On Sunday, May 18, heavy rains caused severe flooding in Accra, Kumasi, and other cities. The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a warning. They expect more intense rainfall and flash floods in the coming weeks.

The downpour displaced thousands of people and submerged neighborhoods. At least three lives were lost in Adenta. This event highlights Ghana's increasing vulnerability during the rainy season.

Felicity Ahafianyo is the Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at GMet. She spoke on Joy FM on Monday, May 19. She warned that more severe weather is likely soon.

“We are getting to the peak of the rainy season,” she said. “By next week or early June, we will see more rain and flash floods.”

Ms. Ahafianyo urged residents in flood-prone areas to take action. She advised relocating if necessary and following instructions from disaster management officials.

“If you are near flood-prone areas, please relocate,” she said. “Listen to the officers assigned to us.”

She also emphasized addressing causes of flooding like clogged drains and poor waste management. Communities should work together to reduce risks as the rainy season continues.
