The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is thankful for a new committee. This committee will oversee the promotion of teachers and deputy directors of education.
GNAT had warned about a possible nationwide strike by April 30. They cited delays in promoting over 1,000 eligible teachers as the reason. After this warning, President John Dramani Mahama ordered immediate promotions for qualified deputy directors.
In response to the President's directive, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu formed a committee. This committee will create procedures for promoting eligible deputy directors. It will also help implement the Government’s Professional Teacher Licensing Examinations.
The Minister stated that this committee is essential for addressing several challenges. These include promoting deputy directors to full director roles and licensing teachers.
On April 25, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah spoke with Citi News. He welcomed the government's intervention as timely and encouraging. He recalled a previous strike last year that lasted two weeks.
Musah noted that the previous government promised promotions by September but did not deliver. He expressed gratitude to President Mahama for this announcement. It opens up opportunities for dedicated teachers to advance their careers further.
