The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the incoming John Dramani Mahama administration to increase the GH¢1.20 per child feeding grant allocated to school caterers.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, criticized the current amount as inadequate to meet students’ nutritional needs, warning it undermines the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
Musah emphasized the need for dedicated funding for pre-tertiary education to address catering challenges and improve education quality.
Highlighting the inflationary pressures, he stated, “Visit Makola or Agbogbloshie markets and see what GH¢1.20 can buy.”
He further lamented the declining quality of school meals, urging swift intervention to safeguard the programme’s purpose of providing a daily hot meal to students.
