The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, has praised the proposal to cover academic user fees for first-year tertiary students but cautioned about its sustainability.
Speaking on JoyNews, he described the initiative by Education Minister nominee Haruna Iddrisu as a positive step to ease financial pressures on students and parents.
However, he questioned how the government would fund the program, citing existing financial struggles in the education sector.
He highlighted overdue payments to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), delays in school feeding funds, and capitation grant arrears as signs of a strained budget.
Musah stressed the need for a sustainable funding strategy to avoid deepening existing challenges. “A solid financial plan is crucial for success,” he concluded.
