The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) supports the government’s National Free Sanitary Pads initiative. They see it as a vital step for girls’ education in Ghana.
However, GNECC wants strong accountability measures. They also seek a clear plan for the initiative's long-term success.
The initiative launched on April 24, 2025. It was introduced by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. The theme was “Improving Menstrual Health and Hygiene for Girls for Quality Education.”
The goal is to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, especially in rural areas.
GNECC praised this move as compassionate and progressive. They believe it could greatly reduce school absenteeism among girls.
Many girls have struggled to attend school during their periods due to lack of hygiene products. This has harmed their academic performance, confidence, and overall well-being.
Some girls have faced sexual exploitation. Reports indicate men offering to buy sanitary pads in exchange for sexual favors, leading to unwanted pregnancies.
While GNECC applauds the initiative, they urge the government to create strong monitoring systems. These systems should ensure effective and transparent implementation of the program.
They warned that mismanagement or selling of sanitary pads could undermine the initiative.
"It is crucial that the pads reach those who need them most," GNECC stated. They emphasized that unauthorized sales must be prevented.
GNECC also calls for ongoing evaluation and accountability. This will help ensure that the Free Sanitary Pads initiative empowers every girl to stay in school and achieve her full potential.
