Newmont’s Akyem Mine has received an award from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). This honor recognizes its outstanding fire safety record. It emphasizes the importance of fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
The award was given during the 2025 Fire Safety Week Celebrations in Koforidua. This recognition comes amid a rise in market fires, domestic blazes, and industrial incidents across Ghana. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided with better fire safety measures and training.
Newmont's commitment to fire safety is evident in the Birim North District and Eastern Region. The company was one of fifteen recognized for exceeding fire safety requirements set by the Fire Precaution Regulations, 2003 (L.I. 1724).
“Safety is not just a policy at Newmont,” said Akua Berantuo Armooh, Health and Safety Manager. “It is how we work and live.” She noted the devastating impact of fires on families and communities in Ghana. Newmont takes every measure to prevent such tragedies.
The company understands that fire safety protects real people—workers, families, and community members. Newmont has launched initiatives to prevent or quickly contain fire emergencies.
These initiatives include joint emergency drills with GNFS’s New Abirem unit. They also provide fire safety equipment and personal protective gear (PPE). Employees receive specialized training in rescue techniques and practical extinguisher training.
As Ghana faces ongoing fire outbreaks, Newmont’s approach serves as a model for others. Their focus on prevention, training, and collaboration can significantly reduce fire incidents.
Recognitions from institutions like GNFS are more than awards; they are calls to action. Companies must prioritize fire safety, invest in preventive measures, and ensure community well-being.
