Newmont’s Akyem Mine has received an award from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). This honor recognizes its outstanding fire safety record. The award emphasizes the importance of fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
The recognition was given during the 2025 Fire Safety Week Celebrations in Koforidua. This comes as Ghana faces a rise in market fires, domestic blazes, and industrial incidents. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided with better fire safety measures and training.
Newmont's commitment to fire safety is evident in the Birim North District and Eastern Region. The company was one of fifteen recognized for exceeding fire safety requirements set by the Fire Precaution Regulations, 2003 (L.I. 1724).
“Safety is not just a policy at Newmont,” said Akua Berantuo Armooh, Health and Safety Manager. “It is how we work and live.” She noted the devastating impact of fires on families and communities across Ghana.
Newmont takes every measure to prevent such tragedies at its sites. If a task cannot be done safely, it will not be done at all.
Newmont understands that fire safety protects real people—workers, families, and community members. The Akyem Mine has implemented initiatives to prevent or quickly contain fire emergencies.
These initiatives include joint emergency drills with the GNFS’s New Abirem unit. They also provide fire safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). Specialized training in extrication techniques and victim rescue is offered as well.
Practical fire extinguisher training sessions are available for employees and community members too. As Ghana faces recurring fire outbreaks, Newmont’s approach serves as a model for others.
The company's focus on prevention, training, and collaboration shows that effective systems can reduce incidents significantly. Such efforts save lives and protect livelihoods.
Awards from institutions like the GNFS are more than just accolades; they urge action. Companies must prioritize fire safety, invest in preventive measures, and care for those around them.
