GNFS throws PRO under the bus over spat with minister

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has apologized for comments made by its Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella M. Ntow Sapong signed the apology letter. It addressed Nartey's "uncomplimentary comments" about a recent fire in Adum, Kumasi.

The remarks have caused controversy and tension with some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

**Background**

Tension arose after Nartey responded to criticisms from the Ashanti Regional Minister. The minister criticized firefighters following the Adum market fire.

In an interview on GH One TV, Nartey defended the firefighters' actions. He explained that one fire tender must stay at the scene, even if empty, for refilling.

However, his explanation upset some people, including Onasis Kobby, who called for his removal.

The Ashanti Regional Minister accused Nartey of being more political than professional. Nartey denied this accusation strongly.

He stated that the minister's demand for removing the empty fire tender contradicted operational procedures. He warned that such demands could demoralize firefighters risking their lives.

To ease tensions, GNFS expressed sincere regret to the minister in its apology letter.

The service promised disciplinary measures against Nartey to prevent future issues.

They reaffirmed their commitment to reducing fire outbreaks in the Ashanti Region and acknowledged regional authorities' contributions to fire management.
