GNFS urges Kantamanto authorities to rebuild market to modern standards

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged Kantamanto market authorities to rebuild the market. They want it to meet modern fire safety standards. This change could help reduce future fire risks.

On April 19, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu spoke on Channel One Newsroom. He highlighted that past reconstruction efforts have not made the market safe. The continued use of wooden structures like wawa boards and plywood keeps it vulnerable.

Nisawu stressed the importance of using fire-resistant materials. He also mentioned essential safety features such as smoke detectors and heat detectors. These improvements are crucial for better fire prevention.

He suggested that markets should operate only during designated hours. Opening in the morning and closing by evening would help prevent traders from living there. This practice increases the risk of fires.

Nisawu said, “Until we reconstruct these markets to modern standards, we will face challenges.” He emphasized moving away from wooden structures for safety reasons.
