GPHA commissions 15 brand new trucks for operations at Tema port

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Enhances Operations with New Trucks

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 new trucks. This move aims to improve operational efficiency at the Port of Tema. The trucks will support growing cargo volumes.

The fleet includes 15 SINOTRUK HOWO trucks with flatbed trailers. Three trucks have a horsepower rating of 400, while twelve have 430 horsepower.

The commissioning ceremony took place at the port. Senior officials from GPHA, Ecobank Ghana, and Zonda Tec Ghana Limited attended.

These heavy-duty trucks are part of GPHA’s modernization agenda. The goal is to enhance cargo handling and reduce turnaround time. This will boost the port's competitiveness in the region.

Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono spoke at the event. He highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure and logistics. He stated that these trucks will improve cargo movement within the port area.

Mr. Tanye-Kulono emphasized maintaining a culture of effective maintenance for longevity. He noted that acquiring these trucks aligns with helping shippers in Ghana.

Mr. Tebon Zuma Esq., Director of the Port of Tema, also spoke about the new trucks. He mentioned they feature advanced safety and emissions technology. This aligns with GPHA’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Mr. Zuma announced that an additional 15 trucks will arrive in three weeks. A total of 100 trucks and over a dozen Reach Stackers are expected this year.

He explained that this batch is part of a total order for 30 trucks this quarter. The second batch will arrive next month, reinforcing their commitment to operational excellence.

These new vehicles will aid container handling, cargo transfer, and internal haulage activities at the port. Mr. Zuma stressed that continuous investment is essential as port traffic grows.

He assured that staff training would ensure proper management and maintenance of the fleet. Equipment alone cannot drive performance; professionalism is key.

Industry stakeholders welcomed this development, noting it would improve logistics within the port. This improvement is expected to positively impact trade flow by reducing bottlenecks.

The new trucks are set to begin operations immediately, enhancing logistics support within the port area. This marks another milestone in GPHA’s efforts to transform Ghana’s port infrastructure.
